Fashion Eyewear trends for 2021

Forget 2020 vision! It’s 2021!

Our eyes are on what’s hot and what’s not in eyewear this year. There is no doubt that South Africans are tending towards more mindful spending and are looking for styles that are easy, versatile, functional and have longevity. Think timeless classics! Nevertheless, there are styles that appeal to the experimental, the bold and the dedicated followers of fashion.

We think there is nothing like a new set of frames to refresh your look, update your style and make you love wearing your glasses again. Here are our top six trends for 2021:

Clear frames

Undoubtedly one of the biggest eyewear trends this year is clear frame glasses. White, translucent and clear is all the rage amongst designers of clothes, accessories and eyewear. Pick yours clear and oversized, clear with a transparent honey or pink shade, clear and demure, or clear with some detail.

Retro, cat-eye glasses

Cat-eye styles seem to be evergreen and they’re still a statement in 2021. There are endless takes on this style. Combined with an on-trend clear finish the cat-eye is a classic with a new twist. Take them chunky or choose a subtle wire frame for a sophisticated, enduring look.

Tortoiseshell frames

Tortoiseshell makes a comeback, with a wide repertoire of colours to choose from. Traditionally, tortoiseshell combined yellow, brown, honey and black speckles. Now you’re spoiled for choice and can choose almost any colour combination to suit your skin tone, hair colour and outfits.

Vintage and round

Make a statement with thick, round, vintage style frames which definitely favour the bold this year. Best suited for square and rectangle shape faces, vintage round frames are a trendy choice for both men and women. Oversized, they make a dramatic statement while smaller frames create a more sophisticated look.

Oversized square styles

Reminiscent of the 1970s, oversized, square styles have a retro feel while being undeniably 2021. Echoing the spirit of the vintage trend, this year’s square style frames are big and thick. Glasses with big frames can suit most face shapes but particularly complement larger, rounder faces.

Thin metal rims

More for the ladies, thin, metal rimmed frames are a refined yet absolutely trendy choice this year. Dainty and elegant, we think thin metal rimmed glasses are set to become a classic. So, if you’re looking for a style that will transcend 2021, try these on for size. Although available in different metals, gold seems to be the big-thing.

Eye-brow glasses

Semi-rimless frames, widely known as eye-brow glasses, are a burgeoning trend. Slim and sleek, they have an elegant appeal. Pick a tortoiseshell on top, trimmed with a lightweight gold at the bottom or frames topped with a dramatic black and lined with a light metal at the bottom.

Frames in the colours of the year

The Pantone Color Institute has awarded the prestige of Colour of the Year to two colours this year. It’s the first time, Pantone has done this since 2016. The Pantone Colours of the Year are Ultimate Gray and Illuminating Yellow, described as “a marriage of colour conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting”. Expect two-tone frames in Pantone’s colour choice to be all the rage this year.
